Start shooting

This week we are going to start shooting. Jack helps us to find a good girl model. After our meeting, we find that she has a lot of experience in posing which is very helpful. We are choosing a sunny morning in a park to start shooting our first group of photos. In this part of photographing, the model will be asked to give more sad feeling in the poses. For the second group of photos, we will mainly focus on home or restaurant kind of places and the model’s poses will focus on the positive feelings like happy. For the last group of photos, we are going to shoot in the night and hope our model can give more kinds of feelings.

Our team are separated to find best locations for our photo shooting. The initial plan is that we will choose garden, restaurant, church and home to be our shooting locations. Equipments required will include a video camera, model clothes, and a tripod.

Use a group of nine images to tell the love story

What I am thinking is when people look at one photo maybe they can find many interesting points but these points are very hard to form a complete story. Therefore, after I have researched some love story photos. I find if we use more photos and all photos talk about one story, they can not only give people a complete feeling but also let people think more about the story.

Final idea decision

After our group meeting before the holiday, our team have sorted out our final ideas. We are going to choose people relationship to be the theme of the story. and use photography to tell a love story. The pictures will be about a girl’s love story, and we think using one girl model only will give viewers more emotional effect. Now I have got my task - I will need to create the whole story for our photos and also start to find a good model for our project.

Narrative photography is the idea that photographs can be used to tell a story. Allen Feldman stated that "the event is not what happens. The event is that which can be narrated. In this case, the medium is photography.

The Narrative Photography Competition in Portland, Oregon describes the concept in the following way: "The power of narrative, or story telling is at the foundation of much of photography. Photograhers are creating complex and descriptive moments in time. Contemporary photographers are crafting and documenting new forms of a visual short story."

Project start

All group members have been assigned different tasks today - MC and I are going to do the game code part, Tim is going to do the music and find some information about how to upload the game to Facebook, Divine will work on the Beginning Animation and Kikuchi will help to do the background knowledge and image part.

No.1
At the beginning we want to make our game 3D, MC and I are going to study a 3D-software called Unity.
The big problem we have is when we put a 3D character mode into Unity, it always lose color and some veins.
The background knowledge of our game is almost good enough by the end of the first week.

No.2
Having failed 5 times, we decide to follow our tutor's suggestion that we change our game into a 2D flash game and mainly focus on how to make player learn some knowledge from our game.
Divine has started to use flash to work on the start animation. (Show how the Pathogens get into human blood)

No.3
I start to learn ActionScript 3.0 because ActionScript 2.0 is not good enough for the game. In the process I change so many parts of code which I already finish. The original goal was to extend.

No.4
MC helps me solve lots of bugs and starts to work as a main programmer for this game. Tim's music style is changed and the original will be redesigned because it is too simple and also too anthropomorphic. We think it will not fit our subject.

No.5
Tim's music needs cut and Divine's animation needs to be resized to 750 * 650.The enemy code part still has 5 bugs to fix, and we have not started to build the different stages and unlock part.

No.6
I finish designing the Unlock and Stage pages, and they work with code in the game.
The SKIP button has a problem so that sometimes it does not work well. For the Animation I help Divine change the character and reduce the size of it.

The SKIP button problem is still there. There is much touch effect in our game. After 11 times of modification it finally works well, and also the score part works now.

We add music successfully. MC and I start working to fix the bugs such as -

Many bugs are fixed, and the game can work now. I have finished the button, unlock page, start page, character, and short animation finally, and MC makes them finally work well. There is no progress in the music and beginning animation or post of our game.

MC helps Tim finish music, and I help post and finish animation.
The SKIP button problem comes out again when we test our game.

No.11 Last week
Uploading game to Facebook can not be resolved. The game "shop" page does not work because 12 errors suddenly jump out.
However, the basic functions of the game are operating normally:
1. The short animation for the character and enemy works.
2. The touch effect and score works.
3. 99% of the button links work.
4. The music works.

From the game making process I have learned a lot. Specifically, this project has illustrated to me what a programmer will look like, and it has actually led me into the real world of programming. In the past, I was thinking that flash game was very easy to make but now I know I was wrong. The birth of a game will need many conditions and, most importantly, need a good plan. Throughout the making process, largely due to these two aspects, we have taken a lot of detours. I will endeavor to improve this game and 100% finish this game during the holiday.

Individual reflective project statement

Understanding about serious game.

My studio project is going to follow the serious game brief to create a game with my group. The serious game is not create for fun or just wast time.The serious games are simulations of real-world events or processes designed for the purpose of solving of solving a problem.Although serious games can be entertaining, their main purpose is to train or educate users, though it may have other purpose, such as marketing or advertisement.(Ernest Adams 2009) So It has a main propose which is need to have some serious informations or can teach some skills and knowledge for players. Players can learn some skills or knowledges from the game and use it in their real life.

What is our idea?


The idea about our serious game is want to give some knowledge of human body health care system to our players. Why we have the idea, it is mainly because in our day life, there are too many thing will effect our body health. For example the noise, food or air quality. And only a few people know these knowledge. Sometime people just do not know why he lose his body health and get ill. Our game is created to help people to fill these knowledge gaps. We going to show and teach this kind of knowledge during play our game. The player will get chance to understand how the human body system run normal and how the disease and virus attack our human body.


For the human body system learning part. We going to choose blood to be our main task. We decided to create a running game for this part. Player is going to be a blood cell in our game. He need to run for a week in a human body and keep the body running well, as the same time player need to dodge some obstacles in the vascular . Like thrombus, blood sugar or some kind of blood virus. During this part, we going to show how the blood system help body running and what element inside the human artery. Also let player know, what kind of substance will effect or kill the blood cell. Thus let player take care their own blood in really life.


Another part of our serious game is through a negative way to help player learning. The player will be become a diseases and viruses manufacturer in our game. Player can use some tools to build up a viruses cell. Then they can use it attack human blood cells. The game interface will be more like a laboratory. Player can through this to understand the composition of the virus and where is the human blood weakness place.

How we realize our game?

As a serious game, compare to the most common game. There are three challenge we should have plan and overbear it.


The first one is the game should have a very deep and rich information background. So that The research part will become a very important thing that will direct impact on the value of the our game. We going to learn the knowledge of human blood and also include what type of disease can effect our blood. About the blood system, we have to find the composition of the blood, the shape and feature of the blood cells. And the flow path of blood in the human body. About the virus in addition to it’s institution, we going to do more research about how the different type of virus attack the blood cells.


The second thing is what production platform we going to use. It is going to be a 3D RPG game or a 2D game? In this issue we still collecting the feedback from our classmate. But we more like create a 3d game rather than create a 2d flash game. Because in our game will involves many human organs, a 2d game is very hard to let player clearly know these organs position in their real bod.


The third thing is how to make the game not boring and attract player to keep playing it. In the process of playing our game we going to add some more elements to attract players and avoid our game look like very boring. We design to use multiplayer to increase the interactivity of the game. For example we can have two people against each other. One player play the blood cell and other player can control the virus to attack cells. Through this way, players can get more interest to play the game.

What areas that our serious game can be applied?


Compare to traditional game the serious game more like design for some specific groups of people or purpose. Our game is against the people that get poor awareness of their own health protection. So our game can be a helpful tool for the patient who get blood disease. Or some student who want to be a doctor in the future. If we going to publish the game, there are also have several agencies may needed, For example the blood donation agencies, Rehabilitation hospital or Medical school.
